Flash point refers to the lowest temperature at which the steam volatilized by combustible liquid can flash and start fires when meeting the fire source after mixing with air to form combustible mixture and reaching a certain concentration. Under this temperature, it removes the fire source and the combustion which cannot be sustained. In oil products, generally speaking, flash point refers to the lowest temperature, expressed in ℃, that can cause flash fire on the oil surface under the specified heating conditions and at a certain interval across the mixture of steam and air escaping from the heated oil products with a flame.

The flash point is mainly used as the safety index to be considered in the storage, transportation and use of liquid oil products, judging whether the oil components are polluted and to measure whether the product specifications meet the requirements. The detection of flash point can be divided into closed cup method and open cup method according to the product properties and service conditions. The closed flash point tester is mainly used for light petroleum products with high evaporation, such as transformer oils, fuel oils, etc. The open flash point tester is mainly used for lubricating oil and heavy petroleum products. Because in the measurement of open flash point, the vapor formed by heating petroleum products continuously diffuses to the surrounding air, making the measured flash point on the high side. For most lubricating oils and heavy oils, especially when it is used under the condition of unsealed parts or low temperature, thus even if there is a very small amount of light mixture, it will evaporate in the process which will not constitute the risk of fire or explosion. All of them are determined by open cup flash point method.
